What Is Personalized Radio (And How's It Different From a Daylist)?
Personalized radio is an auto-extending station seeded from a song, artist, or genre — the next track is picked from the recommendation engine based on the seed plus your listening history, and the queue never ends.
Pandora was the original personalized radio service in the early 2000s, but every major streaming app now ships some flavor: Spotify "Smart Shuffle" radio, Apple Music "Personal Station," Trending Music "Start Radio from this Song" and the AI DJ.
The distinction from a *playlist*: a playlist is a fixed list of N tracks chosen ahead of time. A radio station is open-ended; the next track is computed *while you listen*, often factoring in whether you skipped the previous one. Skip three rock songs in a row and the algorithm pivots.
The distinction from a *daylist*: a daylist is *time-of-day personalized* (calm mornings, hype evenings). Personalized radio is *seed-personalized* — you pick the starting point, and the station extends from there.
