What Is Collaborative Filtering?
Collaborative filtering is a recommendation technique that suggests songs you might like based on what similar listeners liked. Spotify's Discover Weekly is its most famous deployment.
The simplified version: if listener A and listener B both liked songs X and Y, and A also liked Z, then B will probably like Z too. Stack that pattern across hundreds of millions of listeners and you get Discover Weekly, Daily Mixes, and most of what "the algorithm" actually means in music streaming.
Collaborative filtering produces familiar recommendations because it's anchored in what other people in your taste cluster already love. It's bad at discovery — by definition, it can only surface what already-popular among lookalikes — and good at "safe bets."
Newer recommendation systems (including parts of Trending Music's AI DJ) blend collaborative filtering with content-based features and language-model reasoning to escape that trap.
