What Is an AI DJ?
An AI DJ is a streaming-app feature that picks the next song based on your taste, then introduces it in a synthetic voice — like a personal radio host.
An AI DJ blends three technologies: a recommendation model that picks the next song from a catalog of millions, a language model that writes a short spoken intro for it ("staying in that mellow vibe with…"), and a text-to-speech engine that renders the intro as audio.
The category went mainstream in late 2023 when Spotify launched its first AI DJ feature in beta. By 2026, every major streaming service has some flavor — Spotify DJ X, Apple Music's Personal Station, Trending Music's AI DJ, Pandora's Modes (without the synthetic voice).
The good ones do three things well: explain why each track was picked, take voice commands ("play more like this", "less hip-hop") that adjust the mix in real time, and avoid robotic announcements like "Up next: [Artist Name]".
