What Is a Daylist?
A daylist is a continuously updating playlist that shifts throughout the day to match the listener's typical mood at that time — "liminal cottagecore tuesday morning" instead of "Pop Hits."
Spotify popularized the daylist format in 2023: a single auto-generated playlist that updates 4–6 times per day based on what kind of music the listener typically wants at that hour. Mornings might surface "calm acoustic morning"; late evenings might pivot to "introspective indie night."
The genre labels are intentionally weird — daylists frequently combine three or four micro-genre terms into one humorous phrase. The point is signaling that the algorithm is paying attention to context, not just taste.
By 2026, every major service has a daylist-style feature. Trending Music's AI DJ uses daylist labels to seed its sessions — your daylist tells the DJ what kind of music to default to, and the AI takes it from there.
