What Is Offline Playback?
Offline playback (or "offline downloads") lets you save a song / playlist to the device for listening without an internet connection — useful on flights, in subways, or anywhere data is spotty.
On most streaming apps, offline playback is paywalled: Spotify Premium, Apple Music, YouTube Music Premium all require a subscription before you can download a single track. The justification is licensing (offline files persist on the device, so the labels charge more), but most apps could ship it free on the ad-supported tier — they just choose not to.
Trending Music ships offline downloads free. Tap the heart icon to favorite a song and it auto-downloads in the background. The track survives airplane mode, subway tunnels, and bad coffee-shop WiFi.
A note on quality: streaming services typically use a lower bitrate for offline files than for live streaming, which is why audiophile services like Tidal HiFi and Apple Music Lossless ship full-quality downloads as a Premium-only feature.
