What Is Lossless Audio?

Lossless audio is digital audio compressed without throwing away any of the original signal — the file is smaller, but every bit is preserved. Most streaming uses lossy compression like AAC or MP3 instead.

Standard streaming uses lossy formats (AAC at 256 kbps, MP3 at 320 kbps) that throw away inaudible frequencies to keep file sizes small. Lossless formats (FLAC, ALAC) preserve every bit of the original recording at the cost of much larger files.

In practice, the difference is audible only on high-quality headphones (think $300+) or studio monitors. On AirPods, car speakers, or phone speakers, the data simply can't reach your ear with enough resolution to matter.

Tidal, Apple Music, and Amazon Music HD include lossless. Spotify and Trending Music currently stream stereo at standard streaming quality. If you can hear the difference blind, lossless is worth it; if you can't, you're paying for something you can't perceive.
