What Is BPM in Music?

BPM means beats per minute — a measure of song tempo. A typical pop song runs 100–130 BPM. Workout playlists target 130–150 BPM. Lullabies sit under 80.

BPM is the count of musical beats in one minute. It's the metronome speed of a song. Most listeners can't name the BPM of a track they're hearing, but they intuitively match BPM to activity: dance tracks at 120–130, running music at 150–180, sleep music under 80.

DJ apps and workout playlists frequently filter by BPM. Spotify, Apple Music, and Trending Music all include BPM data internally even if they don't expose it directly. Songs are sometimes "BPM-shifted" to match a workout target, though heavy shifts (>10%) tend to sound unnatural.

If you build playlists for a specific activity — running, lifting, sleeping, working — checking BPM is one of the most underrated tools for getting the feel right.
