How to Turn a Song Into Your iPhone Wallpaper (Free, 2026)

The short answer

Open Trending Music, play the song you want, then go to the Library tab and tap Tools → Wallpapers. Tap Create from your song at the top. You get the album art, title and artist arranged on a styled background — not a screenshot with player controls across it.

Then tap Save to Photos, and set it the normal iOS way: Settings → Wallpaper → Add New Wallpaper → Photos.

Why screenshotting the now-playing screen doesn't work

It's the obvious move, and it fails for three reasons that only show up after you've set it.

The player chrome comes with it. Play, pause, skip, the scrubber, the volume slider — all of it lands in the screenshot, sitting right in the middle of your lock screen forever.

Album art is square, your screen isn't. Cover art is 1:1. An iPhone screen is roughly 9:19.5. Something has to give, so iOS either crops the sides off the art or floats it in a band of empty space. Neither looks deliberate.

The clock lands on the artist's face. The lock screen clock sits in the upper third. Album art centred in a square puts the subject exactly there, and iOS won't move the clock for you.

A wallpaper made for the job solves all three at once, because the layout is built around the phone's shape from the start.

Step by step

1. Play the song. The wallpaper is built from whatever is playing, so start it first.

2. Open Library → Tools → Wallpapers. The Library tab is in the bottom bar; Tools is inside it, and Wallpapers is one page within Tools.

3. Tap Create from your song. It's the button at the top of the page. You can also get there from the full player's ••• menu if you're already looking at the song.

4. Restyle it. Pick a layout and a background color so the art sits where you want relative to the clock.

5. Save to Photos. Or tap Share to send it straight to someone.

6. Set it as your wallpaper. In iOS: Settings → Wallpaper → Add New Wallpaper → Photos, then pick the image you just saved.

Making it yours: draw, caption, layout

Open any wallpaper — one you made or one from the gallery — and there's a small editor.

Draw on it freehand. Tap ✎ Draw for a pen, a color picker and an eraser. Useful for circling a lyric, scribbling a date, or just marking it up.

Turn the caption on and move it. The Aa button toggles the name and caption, and you can drag it anywhere on the image. This is the one that matters for a lock screen: drag the text clear of the clock and the whole thing stops looking accidental.

Layout and background color. Change how much of the frame the art fills and what sits behind it. A dark background behind bright art reads well on an always-on display; a color pulled from the art itself looks more designed than a plain black band.

If you don't want album art at all

It's a still image, not a live one. It doesn't update as the song changes. If you want your current track on the lock screen while music plays, that's the now-playing view, not a wallpaper.

Square art is still square. A layout can place it well and put a colour behind it, but it can't invent picture that was never there. Art with the subject off-centre generally lands better under the clock than a dead-centre face.
